Choosing a headstone font
At North East Headstones, we believe that the choice of font for your memorial or headstone is as important as the stone itself. The right lettering not only enhances the beauty of the memorial but also conveys the personality and legacy of your loved one.
We do have a standard font that we use on most memorials. We are happy to use another font if you prefer, or even multiple fonts on the memorial. We can create multiple drawings of your memorial so that you can see what each font will look like before the stone is carved to help you make your decision.
Lettering is most commonly coloured gold with gold leaf. Other colours are available for your lettering if you prefer, though some cemeteries have rules on which colours can be used.
Here’s a guide to the different types of fonts available to help you make an informed decision.
Serif Fonts
Serif fonts are characterized by their small lines or decorative strokes at the ends of the letters. They have a classic and traditional appeal, making them a popular choice for memorials. The added detail of serifs often conveys a sense of dignity and respect, ideal for commemorating a life well-lived. Examples include:
Times New Roman: A timeless choice that blends elegance with readability.
Garamond: Known for its sophisticated curves, Garamond offers a warm, inviting look.
Sans Serif Fonts
Sans serif fonts lack the decorative lines of their serif counterparts, resulting in a clean and modern appearance. These fonts are highly legible, making them an excellent option for a memorial that may be viewed from a distance. Popular choices include:
Arial: A straightforward and highly readable option that maintains a contemporary feel.
Helvetica: Renowned for its clarity and neutrality, Helvetica is perfect for those who prefer a minimalist design.
Script Fonts
Script fonts mimic the fluid strokes of handwritten letters, adding a personal touch to any memorial. These fonts can convey warmth and intimacy, making them suitable for commemorating cherished memories. However, they can be more challenging to read, especially at a distance. Examples include:
Brush Script: A playful and artistic font that evokes a sense of creativity.
Edwardian Script: Elegant and flowing, this font adds a touch of refinement to any inscription.
Decorative Fonts
For those looking to make a bold statement, decorative fonts offer unique designs that can reflect the individuality of the person being memorialized. While these fonts can be striking, it’s essential to ensure that they remain legible. Some options are:
Copperplate Gothic: Combining modern and classic elements, this font features bold capital letters and is great for titles and names.
Bodoni: With its dramatic contrast between thick and thin strokes, Bodoni offers a sophisticated flair that stands out.
Choosing the Right Font
When selecting a font for a monument, consider the following factors:
Readability: Ensure that the font is easy to read, both up close and from a distance.
Style: Choose a font that reflects the personality and values of your loved one.
Durability: Some intricate fonts may be more challenging to carve; consider how well the font will withstand the elements over time.
At North East Headstones, our experienced team is here to guide you through the process of choosing the perfect font for your monument. Whether you prefer the classic elegance of serif fonts or the modern simplicity of sans serif, we’re committed to helping you create a lasting tribute that honors your loved one’s memory.
